Nortel BCM Phone System Initialization Step Sheet

This is an initialization Step sheet that I wrote for a customer that was new to the Nortel BCM platform.

Unpack BCM to make sure that you have all needed components.

If the BASE unit is:

    1. A Nortel  BCM 400 – set dipswitches on modules in order to designate the serial bus of the module capabilities, install modules, and power up.
    2. A Nortel  BCM 450 – install modules and Capacity Expansion Card if needed in unit, and power up.
    3. A Nortel  BCM 50 – power up.

Once the unit is booted, connect the Ethernet connection to the OAM port or LAN port that you are using. The IP addresses will be default at this time.

    1. Default for the OAM port of the Nortel BCM 50 and BCM 450 is
    2. Default for the LAN port on the Nortel BCM 50 is
    3. Default for the LAN port on theNorstar  BCM 450 is
    4. Default for LAN 1 on the BCM 400 is

Connect to your computer. If you do not have, or think that there is a possibility that your Element Manager is out of date, bring up a web browser and enter the appropriate IP address in the URL address field.

The internal BCM web page will come up. The user name and password of this page are the same as the user name and password of the BCM.

Click Administrator options and Download Element Manager. This is an “Install anywhere” Program. Run the program to update (or install) the manager.  (Release 5.0 installs using Java, so be certain to have Java enabled on your computer)

Close the Browser and open the Element Manager.

Create a network element if there is not one available for the appropriate IP address. To do this, go to the “network” button at the top of the screen (or right click on the words “network elements” in the navigation panel), press “Create new Network Element” and input the IP address, User name, and password in the fields provided.

Once the network element exists, click on the IP address in the network element field, input the password, and press connect. ***The first time that you connect to any system, you might get a message stating that the required cartridge is not loaded. This is normal. Load the cartridge.***

You can ignore the “you must change password” message unless it will not allow you to proceed. You can change the password to the same one that the system currently uses – The password that you just used IS a valid replacement password.

Press the OK button on the confirmation screen. This is a programmed field that you will have access to. It can say whatever you choose.

You are now in a programming session. In the Task Navigation Panel you will see two tabs:

    1. Configuration – BLUE – This is where you will do most of your programming. Lines, Sets, Admin access, Resources, etc.
    2. Administration – GREEN – This is where you will locate Alarms, QOS, reset, reboot, update software patches, etc.

Go into the Administration tab to Utilities. Highlight the reset command. Press “Cold Reset Telephony Services” a new field will come up with the region code, system type and Start DN. ***DO NOT PRESS OK IN THIS FIELD UNLESS A BASE CONFIGURATION ASPECT NEEDS TO CHANGE – IT WILL ERASE ALL PROGRAMMING*** press Cancel if all is correct.

Go back to the Configuration tab, and press “system” this will open the menu where you will be able to set the time and date. Set the Time and Date before you do anything else.

Check your key code file to make sure it is loaded. If it is not, press “load file” and direct the system to where you have the key code file saved, and press “open”. It will activate automatically.

Still in the Configuration menu, go to Resources. Press Telephony resources. This is where you will enable any modules and expansions that you have installed for the unit. You can also see the line ports and numbering and DN ports and numbering at this location. You will not be able to enable a digital station module unless you have at least one device attached to the module.

To enable modules if you are working on a:

    1. Nortel BCM 400 – The dip switches dictate which serial bus is in use for each of the MBM units (Base and Expansion cabinet). Change (double click) the module type of each serial bus to the correct type and press Enable.Nortel  BCM 400 does not require a license for an expansion cabinet.
    2. BCM 450 – The modules are enabled in order from bottom (1) to top (4). Change module type accordingly and enable. Dip switches are all factory default (on) in the main cabinet. If you are working with an expansion cabinet the modules are placed according to dip switch settings. BCM 450 Phone System requires a license for an expansion cabinet.
    3. Nortel BCM 50 Phone System – Modules are in expansion cabinets, and all dip switches are set to factory default (on). Connect the expansion cabinets to the expansion ports on the main unit and enable according to installation position. Nortel BCM 50 units require licensing for each expansion.

System is now ready to be programmed.
